Rainy Day Activities for Preschoolers

The worst thing about rain is that it can make for a boring day inside. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep preschoolers busy on days when the weather is bad. They may not even notice that they never left the house. Here are some rainy day activities you can try with your preschooler today.

Make Homemade Playdough

You can make your own playdough by combining:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Mix the ingredients together until they are smooth. Add food coloring if desired. Heat on medium on the stove until it thickens into a ball. Let it cool. The dough is now ready to be used for molding activities, painting, or sensory play.

Play The Floor Is Lava

If your house has a lot of mats, pillows, or other things you can stand on, then play The Floor Is Lava. The rules are simple: Get from point A to point B without touching the floor or you are out of the game. It can be a fun game that also improves your child’s imagination, balance, and problem-solving.

Print and Make Easy Crafts

Crafts are fun for everyone. The only concern is where you can get the supplies or come up with fun crafting ideas. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources online that you can print and enjoy. Many of these resources require nothing more than a printer and a pair of scissors.

The Relaxed Homeschool is one of the best sources of free printable crafts for kids. All you have to do is download, print, and enjoy what it has to offer. If you don’t have a printer at home, take a trip to an office store and print a few to keep in the house for a rainy day. Being prepared with a craft box full of things to do can help you avoid a lot of potential boredom.

Build a Pillow and Blanket Fort

Take some blankets and a stack of pillows to your living room and invite your little one to build a fort with them. You can decorate the inside of the pillow fort by using other blankets, cushions, and pillows. Grab a few books and flashlights to make this rainy day activity last well into the night. Plus, kids of all ages can participate together.

Set Up a Sensory Tub

A sensory tub is a great rainy day activity for preschoolers. You can easily make your own with a shoebox or plastic tub, dry beans or rice, spoons, tongs, and toys you already have around your house. There are also plenty of things you can add to your sensory tub to make it more fun, like plastic insects, toy dinosaurs, and stuffed animals.

Creating a rainy day activity list can help you stay on top of all the activities you can do at home with only the supplies that you have available. Just pick a few activities that your preschooler is ready for and be creative about how to fit them into a day. Next time you have a rainy day, try some of these activities. They will keep your preschooler occupied for hours.
